Rise In Grants For School Expenses

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, August 27.

The rate of the genera! expenses grant to State secondary schools for normal day classes has been increased 121 per cent.

Announcing this today, the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella) said the increased grants would cost §290,000 for a full year; and, as they would be payable from February 1 last, an additional amount would be required in the current financial year. The new rates follow a survey of the pattern of expenditure in selected schools and increases in the cost of administration and maintenance. The new rates will be (present rates in brackets):— For the first 100 pupils, §3l (§30); for the next 200 pupils, §l9 (§18): and the next 300 pupils, $l3 (§10.50); . all pupils in excess of 600 pupils, $ll (§9). Mr Kinsella said the increase was weighted in favour of larger schools because the survey indicated that the financial position of these schools was deteriorating at a faster rate than smaller schools. I The last review of the

general expense grant took place in 1965, and the current rates were set In February, 1966.
