Obituary

MR G. R. CURTIS Mr Geoffrey Robert Curtis, a former chief sub-editor of the “New Zealand Herald” and the Christchurch “Sun” and editor of the “Bay of Plenty Times,” has died in Tauranga. He was aged 66. Born in Lyttelton in 1903 Mr Curtis became a reporter and sub-editor on the staff of the Christchurch “Sun,” which he represented in the Parliamentary Press Gallery. He joined the “New Zealand Herald” in 1935 and during World War II served as a Royal New Zealand Naval Reserve officer with coastal forces in New Zealand and the South Pacific. In 1945 he returned to the “New Zealand Herald” as cables sub-editor and in 1951 was appointed chief subeditor. Mr Curtis left journalism in 1952 to conduct a business in Tauranga, but later joined the “Bay of Plenty Times.” He was news editor for a year before being appointed editor in 1960. He retired as editor about two years ago.
