MOORE INJURES FOOT IN CRASH

The New Zealand speedway champion, R. Moore, of Christchurch, has broken two bones in his right foot and jeopardised his chances of regaining the world championship he won in 1954 and 1959.

Moore received the injuries in a crash in the second test match between New Zealand and England earlier this month. After blowing up his motor in an early heat, he was leading a subsequent race on a machine borrowed from the reigning world champion, I. Mauger, when he dipped the fence with the footrest. The footrest folded back over his foot and he crashed going into the next comer. It took officials more than smin to release Moore’s leg from the machine. After a spell in hospital, he is doing exercises to keep in trim for the world final. He was told by his doctor after the crash that it would be at least four weeks before his fbot would be healed enough for him to ride again. But Moore had other ideas. “I will give it a rest for two weeks before trying it out,” he said. The prospect of riding in

the world final on September 13 with a partly healed injury is nothing new to Moore. When he won his first wofld title, he did so with his left leg in a brace.
