Heavy Cargo At Lyttelton

An electrical transformer bank in four units, each weighing 81 tons lOcwt, will be unloaded from the cargopassenger liner Port Nicholson at Cashin Quay this week. The unite are consigned to the Electricity Department. They will be unloaded by the ship’s heavy lif t gear and each will be taken to Islington through the road tunnel by a road transporter which is 79ft 6in long. During haulage the weight of each load, including the transporter, will be 117 tons.

These unite will be the largest single lifts to come ashore at Lyttelton, as far as records show, and a record transit weight for the road tunnel. Each unit is lift high, 12ft 3in wide, and 15ft long.

Shoe Exports.—Exports of New Zealand-made footwear were valued at $250,000 for the year ended June 30, compared with $4OOO 10 years ago, the Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) said in Wellington last night.—(P.A.)
