Oil Companies’ Tax Appeal Continues

WELLINGTON, August 26.
Submissions of the appellant oil companies in the Court of Appeal today occupied the second day of appeals against amended tax assessments involving s9m in taxes.
The appellant companies are Europa Oil (N.Z.), Ltd, and its subsidiary, the Associated Motorists’ Petrol Company, Ltd. Europa is appealing against a Supreme Court decision which led to the company being assessed an additional ssm tax. The Commissioner of Inland Revenue is counterappealing in respect of a Supreme Court judgment which found in favour of Associated Motorists.
Tax assessments in the subsidiary’s ease totalled s4m. The Solicitor-General (Mr J. C. White. Q.C.), Mr I. L. M. Richardson and Mr G. Cain appear for the Commissioner, and Mr P. T. Mahon and Mr R. F. Pethig for the two companies. Mr Mahon today continued
his submissions, which are expected to last another two days. Today he dealt In detail with evidence given at the hearing.
