GENERAL NEWS

Hail Kills Lambs A heavy, localised hailstorm struck the farm of Mr R. F. Cresswell at Lower Moutere on Wednesday night, killing 12 new-born lambs. The hail fell from 9.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. Neighbouring farms had only light falls. The hail on Mr Cresswell’s farm was still lying in drifts 3in to 4in deep at 10 a.m. yesterday.—(P. A.).

Gift Statue A 9ft bronze statue of Lord Auckland, which West Bengal no longer wants, is to be given a new home in Auckland. The West Bengal Government is anxious to clear Calcutta of Lord Auckland, and a couple of dozen other statues of colonial administrators and generals, so a passage has been provisionally booked for him on the Waitaki, which will leave Calcutta early next month. George Eden, Earl of Auckland, was Governor-General of India from 1835 to 1842. He was a friend of Captain Hobson, who named Auckland after him. The cost of bringing the statue to New Zealand is being met by the New Zealand Insurance Company, whose Calcutta manager is honorary New Zealand agent there. —(P.A.).

Car Restored A 1967 sports car, believed to be the only car salvaged from the Wahine to be restored to its previous condition, is nearing completion in Hawera. The restoring of the car has been a week-end hobby for Mr H. Butler and his two sons for the last nine months. The motor and upholstery show no evidence of five months immersion in Wellington Harbour. The car was purchased at auction for SI4OO.—(PA.).

Heavy Frost A frost of 14 degrees was recorded at Harewood yesterday morning, bringing the number of frosts in Christchurch so far this winter to 71. In the Botanic Gardens the frost reading was 7.8 degrees. Frosts have been recorded on 13 days so far this month. “Cheep” Music The Canterbury Museum Trust Board is thinking about having recorded bird calls piped into the Edgar Stead Hall of Birds to entertain and educate birdwatchers. It might also have recorded commentaries for such special displays as the Polynesian Hall, but first it has asked its education officer (Mr J..' H. Johnston) to report on the practicability of sending out recorded commentaries with the small portable display cases the museum circulates among the schools.
