PANCHEN LAMA
Indian Report Of Escape (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW DELHI, Aug. 21. The Indian Foreign Minister (Mr Dinesh Singh) has told Parliament that the Government had information that the Panchen Lama of Tibet had escaped from a “concentration camp” where the Chinese had imprisoned him, the Associated Press reported. He did not disclose the source of the Government’s information. “We do not know where he has gone,” he added. News that the 32-year-old Panchen Lama, second-rank-ing Tibetan Buddhist after the Dalai Lama, had escaped from captivity was first reported by the United News of India on August 15. At that time, the Indian Foreign Ministry denied knowledge of the story. Mr Singh told Parliament that the Government was considering whether to raise in the United Nations the question of suppression of human rights in Chinese-ruled Tibet. “We are deeply distressed to learn of the violation of the rights of the Tibetan people and our sympathy is with them,” he said.
