Australian Wins V.C.

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) CANBERRA, Aug. 21. An Australian Army veteran, Warrant Officer Ray Stewart Simpson, has been awarded the Victoria Cross for outstanding heroism on two separate occasions in Vietnam.

Warrant Officer Simpson, who is 43, served in World War 11, in Korea, and in the Malayan emergency, and is now on his third tour with the Australian Army training team in Vietnam. The Prime Minister (Mi John Gorton), who announced the award tonight, said that Warrant Officer Simpson’s repeated acts of personal bravery were an inspiration to all who served with him; that his conspicuous gallantry was in the highest tradition of the Australian Army. Warrant-Officer Simpson’s Victoria Cross is the third to be won by Australians in Vietnam; the other two were awarded posthumously.
