STUDY IN U.S.

Detective Inspector M. T Churches, who has been second in charge of the Criminal Investigation Branch in Christchurch since late 1965, will leave for the United States on September 5 to study police administration and detection techniques. In January of this year Mr Churches was awarded a Harkness fellowship of the Commonwealth Fund of New York. These awards are made to young men and women under the age of 35 who show promise of rising to a position of influence or authority in their field. During his 23 months in the United States Mr Churches will attend the Michigan State University’s school of police administration and public safety for about six months. There his studies will centre on police administration, community relations and the administration of justice. He also hopes to spend three months at the Federal 1 Bureau of Investigation’s Na- ■ tional Academy and to take a ’ course with the Federal Bu- • reau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs in Washington.
