Teachers May Send Pupils Home
(Naw Zealand Pv«*S Assbctatton.i AUCKLAND, Aug. 15. Secondary schoolteachers in the Auckland region might send pupils home on Friday afternoons, as a protest against Government inaction on what they regard as vital aspects of education.
All parents of secondary pupils in the Auckland region are to be sent letters, giving details of class sizes and staff shortages, by the Auckland Post-Primary Teachers’ Association.
The move to stop classwork on Friday afternoons was reported today by an Auckland secondary teacher, who said he preferred not to be named. Although the pupils would be sent home, he said, the teachers would stay at their schools to carry out work Which should be done by ancillary staff. The teacher said the Auckland P.P.T.A. had discussed the proposal with a special committee of the northern region of the Secondary Schools’ Boards’ Association.
Mr B. Long, chairman of the Auckland region of the P.P.T.A. confirmed that the possibility of pupils being sent home on Friday after-
noons had been discussed with the school boards. Only the boards could sanction such an action, he said.
