SHOPPING CENTRE
Shirley Scheme Before Board The Town and Country Planning Appeal Board yesterday reserved its decision in an application by the SelfHelp Co-operative, Ltd, for a specified departure from the City Council district scheme to build a shopping centre on the north-east corner of Marshland Road and New Brighton Road. The site of 2 acres 7.9 perches, with a frontage on New Brighton Road, is zoned residential in the existing scheme and half commercial and half residential in the review scheme. The plan is for a supermarket of 16,000 sq. ft, and a two-storey building of 7800 sq. ft divided into shops on the ground floor and professional rooms on the upper floor. Off-street parking is provided. The shopping centre would extend from New Brighton Road past the rear of existing shops to Marshland Road.
Mr R. de R. Flesher, for the Self-Help, and Mr Hearn, for the City Council, said the board had reserved its decision to allow for any other objectors to be heard.
