Auckland Medical School Research
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 14. About $600,000 would be required by the hew school of medicine in Auckland for the forthcoming triennium if it was to develop its potential for effective research, according to the annual report of the Medical Research Council tabled in Parliament today.
The report said that major research expenditure in the 1968 calendar year was into diseases of endocrine glands
I (14 per cent), infectious diseases (12 per cent), cardiovascular diseases (12 per I cent), dental research (7 per cent), research into metabolic disorders (6 per cent), obstetrical and neonatal problems (6 per cent) and immunology (6 per cent). Four ad hoc committees were set up by the council during the year in the fields of psychiatry and the neurobiological sciences, therapeutic trials, medical statistics and transport accidents. Final reports from these committees were expected during 1969 and the council would discuss their recommendations in the light of available finances for the new triennium. The report said that the Government grant for the 1968 calendar year (the second year of the current triennium) was $580,522. Other grants and donations amounted to $30,746.
