AID DURING SURGERY

Gifts To Two Hospitals

Dr M. Louisson, a retired Christchurch general practitioner, is to give an electronic heart monitor to each of two private hospitals. Neither St George's nor Calvary Hospital has a heart monitor, which cost $750 each. Dr Louisson will present his gifts at a joint ceremony on Thursday evening. The machine is designed to monitor continuously either the pulse or the blood pressure of a patient -undergoing surgery. It greatly increases the patient’s security by providing both a continuous visual record and a sound signal. The sensitive pulse meter is attached to the hand and measures each heart beat. The continuous electrocardiogram is recorded through leads attached to the patient’s arms. Dr Louisson retired from general practice about 20 years ago.
