June-July Very Dry

Christchurch has had its second driest June-July period in 17 yeajs, according to the meteorologist in charge of the Weather Office at Christchurch Airport (Mr A. P. Ryan) yesterday. He said that the mean average rainfall at the airport, based on the June-July figures from 1953 to 1968, was 4.11 in. In the same period to date this year the average rainfall was 1.571 n.

He expected a lower figure than this about one year in 10. For the same two months last year the rainfall was 5.97 in. The June-July period with the least rainfall was in 1967 when .94in was recorded. The heaviest rainfall over the same two month period was 7.83 in in 1960, said Mr Ryan.
