‘No Provision For Church Halls’
Although pleased with the Minister’s announcement, Mr C. H. Perkins, chairman of the Christchurch Joint Appeal for Church Halls of Residence, said he could only express his great personal disappointment that there was no provision now, and no indication when there would be any, for the completion of Rochester Hall and the commencement of Rutherford Hall.
The former had been placed in the uneconomic position of accepting subsidy for 41 beds while erecting dining facilities for 200, he said. “The more thin 1900 contributors who supported the projects financial y by more than 8250,000, and those who worked in the appeal will share my concern at the lack of action, which is also no encouragement to such generosity,” Mr Perkins said. “The responsibility for placing the university halls ahead of the ones supported so magnificently by the public appears to lie with the University Grants Committee," he said.
Mr Perkins said that as a member of the University Council he knew of no decision which would give them priority.
The warden of Rochester Hall (Father F. Burning) said that he was delighted that there would be more rooms for students, but the church halls still did not know where they stood.
