Obituary

MR A. G. COPLAND Mr Andrew Gardner Copland, one of the early settlers of the Waimumu district, Southland, and one of a wellknown Mid-Canterbury family, died recently. He was 88. Mr Copland was born on Tiliyfour Farm, near Chertsey, and after leaving school threshed wheat on farms throughout Mid-Canterbury from 1899 to 1904. In 1907 he sold the Kuriwao property, and bought the 12,700-acre Bushy Park run near Waimumu. In 1914 Mr Copland sold the Kelvin Grove part of Bushy Park, and the rest of the property in 1920, when the family shifted to Timaru

for four years. In 1924 the Kelvin Grove area was sold at auction, at which time Mr Copland bought it again. Eight years later he again became the owner of Bushy Park, although he only farmed the Kelvin Grove area. He continued to farm this area

during World War 11. most of the time by himself. In 1947 Mr Copland sold Kelvin Grove to one of his sons and he and his wife retired to Riverton Rocks, moving to Gore in 1959.

He was president of the Gore Agricultural and Pastoral Association and chairman of the Waimumu Cooperative Dairy Factory from 1909 to 1913. He was a member of the Gore Racing Club, and in partnership with one of his sons owned horses which won more than 20 races in the 1948-1959 period, leading winners being Fonso, Lumphanan and Defallock.

Mr Copland is survived by his wife, four sons and a daughter.
