NOISE FROM HARVARDS
Propeller Trial Abandoned The latest of a number of attempts by the Royal New Zealand Air Force to reduce the noise made by its Harvards has been discontinued. It involved the use of a threebladed Mallard propeller, but this proved impracticable for technical reasons.
Experiments have been carried out at Wigram for a number of years in an effort to find a quieter propeller. These included shaving up to 3in off the tips of the propeller blades to reduce the diameter, and adjusting the engine exhaust stubs. All the trials had been inconclusive, said the commander of the R.N.Z.A.F. base at Wigram (Wing Commander R. A. Mac Kinder) yesterday. The National Airways Corporation's engineering headquarters at Christchurch Airport had carried out noise tests and found the Mallard showed some reduction in noise level. Although plans had been drawn up for a propeller conversion the technical difficulties involved led to the trial being discontinued. Also, said Wing Commander Mac Kinder, a continuing supply of Mallard propellers and spare parts could not be assured.
