Invalid Stamps

Stamps in pounds, shillings and pence denominations will no longer be valid for the payment of Post Office charges after tomorrow, the chief postmaster in Christchurch (Mr M. T. Reedy) said yesterday. Any stamps in denominations of the old currency may be changed for decimal currency stamps until July 31 next year, Mr Reedy said. Money For Cripples The sum of $l3B had been given to the Canterbury and West Coast branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society in memory of Mrs D. Moir, who had been closely connected with the society, the secretary (Mrs M. L. Bernacchi) said yesterday. Mrs Moir died recently. The money would be used to buy a child’s wheelchair, Mrs Bernacchi said.

Chathams Mail The regular air service to the Chatham Islands was resumed yesterday and normal arrangements for postal articles to the islands now applied, the chief postmaster in Christchurch (Mr M. T. Reedy) said yesterday. Letters, air parcels and subscribers’ copies of newspapers would be flown to the islands from Wellington, and other articles and surface mails would be sent by sea from Lyttelton, he said.

School Extensions The Government has approved a grant to enable tenders to be called for six more additional teaching units and the conversion of an existing classroom at the Shirley Boys’ High School. The member of Parliament for St Albans (Mr H. J. Walker) received a telegram advising this yesterday from the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella). Disguised Freighters As it did with its Canberras in 1964, the Royal New Zealand Air Force has decided to camouflage its Bristol Freighter fleet. Two of the freighters have already been changed from their familiar silver, blue and white. The new colours are two shades of green and tan as applied to many American aircraft operating in war zones. The Air Force intend to repaint the aircraft as they undergo major overhauls.

$lOO For Refugees

About $lOO was collected recently for inter-church aid from an art exhibition held in Aldersgate, the Methodist centre in Durham Street, by a Christchurch artist, Mrs G. Crothall. The director of the inter-church aid department of the National Council of Churches (Mr F. G. Heard) said that the money would be used to aid refugees.

Contraception Story

A comic strip story on contraception methods was being composed by the New Zealand Family Planning Association to educate those incapable of reading extensively on the subject, Dr Ruth Black said in a lecture at Auckland University yesterday. The title of her lecture was “Family by Choice Only.” —(P.A.)
