SKIING RACES
First Major
Events The first major Canterbury ski race meeting of the season will be held at the North Canterbury field this weekend. The Stamers Smith Memorial giant slalom will be raced today and the Broken River Trophy tomorrow. The events have attracted very good entries; about 40 racers will be competing in the two events. The absence of R. Wormersley, C. Wormersley and M. Gardner with the New Zealand ski team in Australia, has left the race wide open. One of those most likely to justify his high seeding will be P. Hubrich.
He is a very consistent racer who usually stays on his skis through a course. He has held the Stamers Smith Memorial for the last two years.
A. Watson and A. Chance (Otago) should be prominent and the Amur! competitors, G. Hargreaves and W. Gardner are capable of beating the large field.
