Owner To Ride Foxonewa
Foxonewa, the favourite for the Winter Hurdles at Trentham tomorrow, will be ridden by his 28-year-old owner, Mr R. Autridge. Mr Autridge made the -decision to take the mount when he learned that Foxonewa’s regular rider, K. Old, was out of action with a back injury. Mr Autridge was first licensed as an amateur rider in the 195657 season. He rode the winners of five races in 1963, but this year he had had only pne race-ride, at the Maramarua meeting in May.
The last successful amateur against the professionals at Trentham was Mr J. L. Tims, who won the 1957 Wellington Steeplechase on Conkeda. Twenty-one years ago a South Island amateur, Mr E. R. Curtis, went within inches of victory on his horse Booiamski in the Trentham Hurdles. When ridden by a professional in the Winter Hurdles a week later Boolamskee made one of his rare mistakes and fell. In 1947 Mr Curtis won the Jumpers* Flat at Riccarton, but he entrusted the mount to the late T. J. Boyle in the Grand National Hurdles and his jumper completed a good double for the meeting.
