VIETNAM MOVES

Denial Of Report (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SAIGON, July 9. The Military Commander of South Vietnam’s northern provinces today denied American reports that 7500 North Vietnamese troops had been withdrawn from the area under his command.

Lieutenant-General Hoang Xuan Lam said in a newspaper interview that infiltration of the First Corps Tactical Zone—the five northernmost provinces—was continuing at a level of 4000 men to 5000 North Vietnamese troops a month. “This level has been maintained and not reduced,” the general said. He emphasised that there had been no sign of any recent withdrawals from within or just south of the sixmile wide Demilitarised Zone dividing North and South Vietnam, although some units had been replaced. The “Los Angeles Times” reported that President Nixon was considering withdrawing almost all the 538,000 United States troops in Vietnam by the Congressional elections of November next year. The “Los Angeles Times” said that Mr Nixon disclosed his views at a private meeting with Republican Senators, but the senators were not sure whether he planned to undertake the withdrawal or merely hoped he could carry it out.
