MAORI TRIAL
Canterbury Has Four Four Canterbury players have chances of gaining selection in the national Maori Rugby team this month. The players—V. R. Baker (Suburbs, flanker), R. W. Norton (Linwood, hooker), R. L. Wards (Southbridge, wing), and L. H. Karatau (Lincoln College, reserve half-back) —have been chosen in the Southern Maori XV to play Northern in the Prince of Wales Cup match at Gisborne on July 17. After this game the national Maori side will be chosen to play Poverty Bay, also at Gisborne, on July 19. Baker, a lively loose forward, has played a vital role in Suburbs’ dramatic rise to the top four this season. Norton, one of the fastest hookers in the province, is the Canterbury B hooker this season, and Wards was in the Canterbury A squad iast year. Karatau has been prominent in university football.
