BIG WAINONI SUBDIVISION
s The subdivision of a ] 50-acre farm site which will eventually contain 240 houses has been started at Wainoni. The t site is between the Avon a River, west of the Bower bridge, and the northern i end of the Avondale golf i course. ] The boundaries of the site 3 are shown by the white lines e on the aerial photograph, j The dotted line shows the ap- .. proximate route of the proB posed Burwood-New Brighton j expressway, crossing the . river from New Brighton . Road to link at Wainoni Road with Bexley Road, which will be widened. The site has a half-mile rivyr frontage, and an applipresent width— and deepen it is to go before the Christchurch Drainage Board soon. It is proposed to cut back the south bank, using the spoil to faise part of the land in the*subdivision which lies about sft below the level of the river. The' plan envisages a boule-vard-along the riverbank. It will be lined with trees, and be open to pedestrians only. The bank will be stepped with a gentle slope to the - river so that boats may easily - be launched. A launching 5 ramp may be included for r pleasure craft, which are limited to a speed of five ’ miles an hour on the river. The land-development costs and reading, with all services underground, will exceed $400,000. The first stage, off Orrick Crescent, containing 40 houses will be completed
by the end of this year, and it is expected to have the whole subdivision ■ completed in two to three years. A dragline and earth-
moving equipment are being used to move about 100,000 cubic yards of spoil to prepare the site. The contractor, Burnett Industries (North Canterbury), Ltd, is working for the subdivider, MerrittBeazley Homes, Ltd. A House on the edge of the subdivision, occupied by Mr S. C. Hampton, the fanner who sold the land-to the subdivider, will be preserved. The house is at least 100 years old, with colonial-style veranda and windows at the front as they were when the house was built. Mr Hamp, ton has lived in the house for 50years. The subdivision plan calls for the preservation of the house and about an acre of ground, including the trees. This reserve may be used for a scout den, or similar youth purwite-'M Mr r. Yeoman, of Davis, Ogilvie and Associates, surveyors and consultant engineers to the subdivider, said that another subdivider on 30 acres west along the river was very interested in having the river widened and deepened. The Drainage Board had recently bought 40 acres immediately west of the second subdivider, and would build its land up with dredgings from the river. "There will b e about 600 houses in the three eventual subdivisions," Mr Yeoman said.
