South Africa In N.A.F.T.A.?
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 19. The New ZealandAustralia Free Trade Agreement could eventually be expanded to Include South Africa, the South African Minister of Economic Affairs (Mr Haak) said in Wellington today. Trade between New Zealand and South Africa had increased markedly in the last nine months in South Africa’s favour, and it could be expanded further in the future so that N.A.F.T.A. could be extended, he said. South Africa was looking to New Zealand and Australia for co-operation to com-
pete against the Common Market, he said. If Britain entered the E.E.C. both South Africa and New Zealand would lose special privileges. South Africa Could supply New Zealand with a wide variety of consumer goods, industrial plant, and raw materials. He gave little indication of specific items which New Zealand could sell to South Africa as part of expanded trade. His country was selfsufficient in dairy products. However, he said, there might be openings for some types of paper and for some crossbred wools.
