Paparoa Coal
Sir,—“Deep Breath” made an error. The sulphur content of Paparoa coal is .02 upwards. He is quite right in that few people know that this coal is available for the reason that the State Mines Department does not advertise it. When buying any new article it is usual to receive a pamphlet of instruction on its use. If this were done with Roa coal people would find that Mr Shand does not know his coal, or has been poorly advised by those who should. The coking properties of Roa coal make it very economical. The coke that remains after the initial burning can be used again and still gives out a very good heat. Even Roa slack coal, if damped down and well ventilated from below, will heat almost as well as Mr Shand’s one-inch coal. “Deep Breath” has a problem; Mr Shand has a problem; and the miners of Paparoa on four days a week for the last eight months and facing redundancy have a problem. Real co-operation and a true presentation of coals available and their qualities would help each of them to a solution.—Yours, FIRE WITHOUT SMOKE. June 17, 1969.
