DEFENCE POLICY
R.S.A. ‘Not Qualified’ (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 18. Although the members of the Dominion council of the R.S.A. had fought in one or both world wars, they were not qualified to direct the Defence Ministry in modern warfare, it was said at the annual meeting of the R.S.A. in Wellington today. The chairman, Sir Hamilton Mitchell, said the council did not presume to instruct the Ministry. Its members were expressing opinions. The best commander was one who made his own decisions, but only after he had heard all possible suggestions, Sir Hamilton Mitchell said. The council’s policy on defence, immigration, domestic affairs and general purposes was reaffirmed with few exceptions. In its policy on the • Navy, the council urged that consideration be given to the replacement of vessels used for fishery protection and training purposes, and to the building of the new vessels in New Zealand.
