Scrappy Match
LINWOOD U: W. P. Noonan, G. J. Rosanowski tries; Rosanowski two goals. HORNBY 9: R. A. Neiman try; T. Williams three goals. Only in the last few minutes, when Hornby was fully extending the Linwood defence, did the match create much interest. Earlier, poor handling and passing and a lack of organised attacking movements by both teams disrupted the game as Linwood moved to a 10-point lead at half-time. Hornby was much improved after the interval in spite of injuries that forced K. N. Netman and B. W. Langton to leave the field. R. A. Neiman’s try, the best of the game, came after a long run by W. Woodgate along the side-line. As the last Linwood cover defenders converged on Woodgate he flicked the ball in-field to the unmarked Neiman. In the last 15 minutes T. Williams had three chances to kick penalty goals and G. Woodgate (twice) and Williams failed with field goals. Woodgate won most of the scrums in this period and Linwood often kicked away possession, enabling Hornby to attack almost continuously. The Linwood defence, however, did not falter. J. A. Flanagan and G. J. Rosanowski were the most consistent Linwood forwards and M. E. Morgan and W. J. Godfrey had successful games in the backs. W. R. Robertson and M. R. Chapman provided much of the forward penetration for Hornby and B. Houston and W. Woodgate were elusive backs. Williams handled Linwood’s kicks well and ran strongly in possession. Referee: Mr N. E. Taylor. Easts Upsets CHRISTCHURCH-EASTERN SUBURBS W: G. R. Cooksley two, A Rushton tries; J. C. Hawthorne four goals, field goal. PAPANUI IS: R. P. Schwass, D. Martin. B. Bigwood tries; P. C. Napier two, Schwass goals. A much improved Christ-church-Eastern Suburbs repulsed early Papanui attacks and was not headed after Rushton scored the first points midway in the first half. Although Papanui evened the score at 5-5 and drew up to 13-14 after 65 minutes, Easts recovered to win. Cooksley engendered more verve in the Eastern attack with his swift, deceptive runs. B. Williams gave his three-quarters many opportunities and Hawthorne, especially, made use of possession. An interception by Williams led to Cooksley's first try after a move that covered more than half the field. P. T. Tainui and Rushton played well in the Eastern pack. K. R. Blackler clearly out-looked R. Franklin and G. C. Gass, who came on as a replacement. Reteree: Mr D. Smale.
