Cycling Trophies Won By Papanui
Papanui dub cyclists did a notable double - at the week-end by winning the Hope Gibbons * Shield (senior) on Saturday and the Grant 1 Cup (junior) yesterday, when Canterbury dubs competed in the two 25-mile time trials.
' In the senior event, Papa,’nui A (W. Thorpe, B. Stock--well, H. Bush, B. Chisholm and I. McLean) beat Timarj 'A by 64sec. Umaru, well led by A. Hood, had started * 20mto before Papanui A and 'appeared a possible winner - until the Papanui team 1 crossed the line in the faster time. The experience of the PapaHui riders was evident on the homeward les of the course, from Yaldhurst to Aylesbury - and return, when they took full - advantage of the following breeze to reacb speeds of up to so miles an hour. * Papanui had to ride for much of the distance without McLean’s support after he had lost contact with his team-nates before the half-way stage. Avon A, which included two first-year riders, did well to fin-
isb third and the Papanui C team, which had the firth fastest time, shared the handicap section with Tlmaru A. Papanui will now travel to Levin on July 5 to defend the national Hope Gibbons Shield which it won last year. The Papanui junior riders dominated the Grant Cup fixture, the two teams filling the first two plaeings, ahead of Avon and Tlmaru.
