Hospital Corner Parking

Sir,—lt is good to read of this parking improvement. However, why do the job by half? Surely the footpath could be moved behind the second or third row of trees and “under-tree” parking used. The advantages: closer hospital parking; old and crippled could enjoy the park from cars; ample space still left for picnicking; it would become an all-day shady park; save “meter feeding” and “car changing” by many workers; keep unused cars out of the city centre; easy approach for timid drivers; cheap to build; so no meters, please. For many years under-tree parking has been practised further along this road. Why not here? “Hands off our parks” should be “Use our parks,” and I am sure that if our pioneers were to.return they would heartily approve.—Yours, etc, COUNTRY CLIENT. May 29,1969. [The City Council’s Director of Reserves (Mr H. G. Gilpin) replies: “Under the Reserves and Domains Act, the council is permitted to

provide car-parking facilities for the convenience of users of the park but has no authority to set aside areas for general parking purposes. The provisions at present made are considered adequate.”]
