Assistance from the fund will not be restricted to members of the association. In Rotorua today, the association's president, Mr C. M. Bennett, said the association hoped to raise at least $20,000. He said the inspiration for the fund had come partly from the assistance provided to Maori veterans of World War I from the proceeds of a farm property at-Wairoa. “The chaps of the Maori
I Battalion are getting on in • years now and in many cases have only the normal types - of benefits to fall back on in . their old age,” Mr Bennett ■ said. “From a welfare angle t extra assistance is becoming necessary.” Mr Bennett said the trust < account had already been I opened and the first donations I made. i A national lottery was likely to be the first major fundI raising drive.
