Tasman Crossing At Nineteen Knots
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 9. The Maheno arrived in Auckland today on her first return trip from Sydney. Within 15 minutes of her tieing up at the wharf the 19-man gang at the container terminal was unloading the first of 145 containers for Auckland.
The work should be finished late this afternoon. It would take five 17-man gangs four days using conventional methods.
Loading was to begin late today, with containers holding 800 tons of general cargo for Sydney, and 90 tons for Wellington and Lyttelton. Twenty cars for Auckland were unloaded. They were taken by the 30-ton lift from the upper deck to the main hold, and were then driven off the vessel.
The master. Captain 3. Warren, said he was very pleased with the first trip and the good cargo. The departure from Sydney was delayed by a manningstrength dispute, but the Maheno gained time crossing the Tasman at 19 knots.
The company said there should be no similar problems in Auckland. Unions and the company had agreed on details when the coastal container vessel Hawea began service last year.
