Mrs Court Wins Third French Singles Title
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) PARIS. With a brilliant win in the women’s singles by Mrs M. Court, Australia won three of the five major titles at the French tennis championships which ended on Sunday.
The unpredictable Mrs Court, after overcoming a second-set lapse, regained command in the last set to beat the. British professional, Mrs A. Jones, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, to win the French title for the third time.
The all-Australian clash in the men’s doubles was won by J. Newcombe and A. Roche, who beat R. Emerson and R. Laver in a five-set, two-hour final, 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, 64.
Later Australia had a share in the mixed doubles title when Mrs Court teamed with the American professional, M. Riessen, to beat the French titleholders, Miss F. Durr and J. C. Barclay, 6-3, 6-2. R. Laver, who won the men’s singles title bn Saturday, faces another concentrated week’s tennis if he is to reach the final of the Wills £10,600 Open championships,
which will start at Bristol today. Twenty-two professionals are among the entrants for the most popular British tournament outside Wimbledon, and worth £l6OO to the winner. Laver and Roche are seeded to meet in the final, and an all-Australian semi-final could match Laver with Newcombe, and Roche with K. Rosewall. Although these matches are
only the best of three sets, they should provide a useful guide to Wimbledon form, as the seedings there will be much the same as at Bristol.
In Santiago on Sunday, Brazil took a 2-1 lead over Chile in the South American zone final of the Davis Cup, Reuters reports. T. Koch (Brazil) beat P. Cornejo, 7-5, 6-3, 64 in the second singles match, which had been halted on Friday after the first two sets. Koch teamed with E. Mandarino to win the doubles match over Cornejo and J. Fillol, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. Results on the last day of the French championships. Men’s Junior Singles.—A. Munoz (Spain) bear J. Thamin (France), 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Men's Doubles.—J. Newcombe and A. Roche (Australia) beat R. Emerson and R, Laver (Australia) 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Mixed Doubles.—M. Riessen (U.S.) and Mrs M. Court (Australia) beat J. C. Barclay and Miss F. Mulligan Beaten.—The Aus-tralian-born M. Mulligan (Italy) was beaten, 7-9, 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, by the Swedish Davis Cup player, J. Lundquist, in the final of the men’s singles In the Saltsjoebaden lawn tennis tournament.
Visit To N.Z The former boxer, Tom Heeney, will visit New Zealand in September. Heeney fought Gene Tunney for the world heavy-weight championship in 1928.
Paris C.P.—T. Scfienken (Australia, Brabham) won the formula three Paris Grand Prix| R. Wissel (Sweden, Techno) was second and J. Jabouille (France, Alpine Renault) third.
Trials Quest. —The New Zealand Riigby Uniop executive decided last night to refer to its council an application by Auckland to hold next year’s North Island and final national trials.
