New Tyre Popular

YJORE than half the tyres sold in Australia next year will be of the new fibreglass bias-belted type, tyre manufacturers report.

The tyres are intended to give as much wear and roadholding as a radial-ply tyre, but without the radials extra noise at low speeds. The construction of the tyres is a combination of radial and cross-ply techniques. The new tyres were first developed in the United States, and tyre manufacturers both there and in Australia say few new tyres have become so popular so quickly. Like radial-ply tyres, the bias-belted tyres are said to give up to twice the tread life of a normal tyre, to improve handling, and to reduce fuel consumption. Like radial-ply tyres, they must not be mixed with ordinary tyres.
