Damage To Games Boat

Although the coxed-four rowing shell whch won New Zealand’s only gold medal at the Olympic Games in Mexico has been extensively damaged, it is not beyond repair and is insured.

The New Zealand rowing manager at the games Mr B. R. Walker) said last evening that the New Zealand Rowing Association’s council would probably decide to have the shell repaired and then sell it.

“After repairs in New Zealand, the shell would not be up to international or interprovincial standard but it would be suitable for a club,” said Mr Walker. “It is not financially practical to send the shell back to its maker in Italy.” Three parallel splits about 3ft to 4ft long were discovered in the bottom of the hull when it was unpacked in Christchurch yesterday.
