Under-age Drinking

Sir,—On Thursday evening I was having a quiet drink in the public bar of a hotel, when at 9.15 in walked a young married couple with their son, aged about four. The husband ordered three sherries and they seated themselves at a table surrounded by card and dart players; and lo and behold, junior consumed his glass. The publican was present while this was in progress. The only reaction was a few raised eyebrows and one comment: “Well, now I have seen everything.” Surely this is stretching things a bit far. I suppose if junior were given a breathalyser test he could have been prosecuted fer being intoxicated in charge of a tricycle,—Yours, etc., CORK IT UP. May 14, 1969. [Superintendent C. L. Scanlan, of the Christchurch Police, said that if the correspondent called or wrote to him, he would have the matter investigated.] [The licensee of the hotel replies that he has no knowledge of a child being in the public bar.]
