“All Farming Aspects A Risk”
One of the problems seemed to be that people were always looking for security, the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Taiboys) said when he spoke to a short course for vegetable growers at Lincoln College. All aspects of farming constituted a “risk” industry, he said.
Mr Taiboys had been asked for his views on a proposal for a co-operative processing organisation, with some State aid.
Mr Taiboys said that if such a proposal was put to him it would be given every consideration. But as a considerable amount of money could be invested in such an enterprise he felt it would be essential that those involved be fairly deeply committed, so that they did not give up after running into a little trouble at the outset. Recalling that an earlier speaker had referred to the successful development of the horticultural industries in
Israel and Morocco, Mr Talboys said that there was noone to take the risks for these people. Mr Taiboys said he had been asked what he was going to do about the exorbitant profits made by meat companies. He had told the inquirer that the remedy for him was to ship on his own account. Back had come the answer “. . . and take all of the risks myself.” There were going to be risks in the development of the industry, Mr Taiboys said. These could be taken collectively in a co-operative or “you can pay some guy to take them for you. I do not know any alternative to this.”
