GARAGE FINED
Surcharge On Petrol (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 20. Fines totalling $BOO, with $2lO costs and solicitors’ fees, were imposed on White Glove Service Stations, Ltd, Papatoetoe, by Mr D. G. Sinclair, S.M., in a reserved decision in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court today.
At a hearing in February, the company pleaded not guilty to charges of placing a surcharge of 5c on pricecontrolled items sold after 9 p.m. . Mr W. D. Baragwanath appeared for the Department of Industries and Commerce, and Mr R. I. Barker for the company. Referring to the defence evidence that the extra charge was made to offset increased costs and to provide better security for night staff, the Magistrate said that he did not find the surcharge unreasonably high. Similar surcharges were found in hotels and restaurants. He dismissed two of the five charges against the company.
