Bangkok Spirit Good, Says P.M.
(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent)
BANGKOK, May 21.
Asian doubts of American determination had been proved groundless, support from other S.E.A.T.O. partners had been reaffirmed, and a “very good spirit prevailed” throughout the conference.
The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) made these remarks at the end of the annual conference of S.E.A.T.O. in Bangkok today.
He said the surprisingly early ending of the conference pointed to the spirit of co-operation and unity. Mr Holyoake said: “There must have been some natural
worry in the minds of Asian countries, particularly, until President Nixon’s statement a few days before the conference.
“This removed any doubts as to the determination of the United States fully to carry out its commitment in Vietnam and its commitment to S.E.A.T.O. “This was the main ingredient which infused a feeling of greater strength and confidence in the organisation,” said Mr Holyoake.
