20 Houses Stand In Floodwater

(N.Z. Press Association; IfAITAIA, May 21. More than 20 houses were surrounded by water as the peak of a flood moved past Kaltaia at dusk today. To add to the confusion, power' failed for an hour, putting most of the town in darkness. The flood came after sin of rain which fell from midnight to 8 a.m. today accompanied by a violent electrical storm which disrupted telephone communications to several outlying districts.

At Pawerenga. flood waters raced through the small Post Office. Country roads blocked by slips or floodwaters included the north road to Cape Reinga, which had up to 4ft of water across it. Farmers spent the day moving stock from flooded paddocks; no losses are reported. Farmers and townspeople were hoping the flood waters would drop considerably before the next high tide backed up the swollen rivers about midnight.
