Safety Matches

Sir,—Being a fairly heavy smoker, when my lighter broke down, I bought a packet of matches (New Zealand made). The first box did not seem very full, so I took the trouble to count six boxes, with the following results: 49, 52, 50, 51, 53 and 50. Is there any law that a box of matches should contain so many sticks. I was under the impression it was 60.—Yours, etc., NO LIGHTER. May 12, 1969. [Mr J. J. Barnicoat, secretary of Bryant and May, Bell and Company, Ltd, replies: “Your correspondent was rather fortunate in his purchase. Before new plant was installed here five years ago our ‘Beehive’ boxes contained an average of 44 matches. Now the figure is 46. The boxes are filled mechanically and the machines are set to give a predetermined average count per box. The use of slightly thinner match sticks nowadays sometimes gives the impression that the purchaser is not getting as many matches as he used to. There is no law stipulating how many matches a box should contain.”]
