Wellington Statement

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright)

WELLINGTON, May 15.

The Department of External Affairs in Wellington knows of about 100 New Zealanders in Kuala Lumpur. A department spokesman said today that there were 33 seconded staff, including dependants, at the High Commission there, and the department had records of about 50 others in the city for such purposes as study or business. The latter figure included wives, but not children. The department was also aware of 15 New Zealand women who were the wives of other nationals.

But, the spokesman added, apart from the High Commission staff, the figures were only approximate; there might be tourists and others who had not registered with the commission.
