BUSIEST ROADS
Roads in Britain are now carying twice as much traffic as roads in the United States or France. They are the most congested roads in the world, with 53.3 vehicles a mile, says a report published by the British Roads Federation. The figures mean that on
major and secondary roads there are less than 12 yards of space for each vehicle, the report says. Revenue from British motor vehicle taxation has doubled since 1960, and last year roadusers paid a record $2538 million in tax.
Roads now carry more than 87 per cent of all Britain’s goods, and last year sales of British vehicles earned $852 million.
