Major Singing Prize

The main event of yesterday’s session of the Christchurch compeitions was the final of the Thomas Andrews Silver Challenge Cup, for the winners of six major singing classes. It was won by Bryan Vinnell, who reached the final by winning the British art song and the men’s oratorio classes.

Second place was won by John Harker, winner of the men’s Operatic solo, and Virginia Lucas, who won the women’s section of the British art song, was third. The other finalists were Lenore Little and Noreen McConnel.

The Civic Music Council’s scholarship for soprano, mezzo-soprano or contralto singers was woq by Sonya Black, who sang “To The Children.” Lesley Betts was second, and Hilary Page third.

The result of the speech and drama scholarship. 14 and under 16, held on Saturday, has been changed. The revised placings are: Phillipa Direen first, Gerard Shaw second, and Rosemary Bartlett third.

Basketball Win.—New Zealand is lying third in the Australian under-18 basketball championships after beating the Australian Capital Territory, 59-46.
