Council Attacks Drainage Board

He was appalled at the inconsistency of the Christchurch Drainage Board towards sewer extensions, the chairman (Mr D. B. Rich) told a meeting of the Waimairi County Council last evening.

It was wrong at this stage of the county’s development that a night-soil collection was still necessary in Burwood Road and Hills Road, said Mr Rich.

He was commenting on a report from Cr F. S. Blogg, a member ot the board, on a request from Hills Road residents for a sewer. Because

the bouses were outside the urban fence, the board’s policy precluded the extension, he said. In view of the inflexibility of the board’s policy, said Cr Blogg, the council might consider re-zoning the small pocket of houses concerned. Mr Rich said that it was not the council that was wrong with its zoning, but the board, which was taking its policy to ridiculous lengths. The council decided to refer the question to the Regional Hanning Authority’s technical advisory committee, suggesting that anomalies arose from the board’s decision and that the Hills Road block should be brought inside the urban fence.
