STRIKE IN AUST.
Union Chief Imprisoned (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, May 15. The imprisonment today of the Victorian Tramways Union leader, Clarence O'Shea, aged 62, for contempt' of court, has led to a nationwide transport strike. O’Shea was sent to prison after refusing to enter the wit-ness-box or produce union records in the Commonwealth Industrial Court. After his arrest, the union announced a nation-wide stoppage for tomorrow, and was quickly supported by 26 other unions fighting against penal clauses.
In Sydney, trains, buses and ferries will stop for four hours from 1 a.m., and in Melbourne the trams will stop for 24 hours from midnight. Similar staggered transport strikes will be held throughout Australia.
O’Shea has failed to appear before the court three times previously to give details of the Victorian branch’s finance.
