“Need For Big Brother”

It would be difficult to find anyone in Niue who favoured independence, said the Minister of Island Territories (Mr Hanan) when he addressed the annual conference of the New Zealand Institute of Public Administration on Tuesday. “The Niueans are very conscious of their need for a big brother," he said. '“This attitude is incomprehensible to many of the representatives at the United Nations, They simply do- not believe that any people in the world would prefer to' live in' a state of anything but independence. “However, the relatively hard life of the people in Niue has given them a practical, -down-to-earth approach that is unusual in Polynesia. At the moment they are more interested in economic progress than in political progress." 6
