Discussion On Hornby Fertiliser Works
Some clarification of the meeting last week called by the Paparua County Council to consider the operation of Kempthorne, Prosser and Company’s Hornby fertiliser works was desirable because of criticism expressed by the publicity officer of the Christchurch Clean Air Society (Mr P. V. Neary) of the council's action in limiting attendance at the meeting, the council chairman (Mr D. H. Warren) said yesterday. “At the meeting, the council's finance committee, before opening discussions with representatives of Kempthorae, Prosser and Company, invited local residents who had recently complained about the company’s operations to explain their difficulties to both council and company representatives,” said Mr Warren. were made
for one of the residents, Mr A. C. Loach, well known in the district and living near the worts, to act as the main spokesman, but all residents present were given an opportunity to speak and the majority did so. “Also present were the chief chemical inspector of the Health Department in Wellington (Mr T. Douglas) and the chemical inspector for the South Island (Mr D. Pullen).
“After the residents left a very frank discussion took place between the council’s , finance committee and the • company representatives, and , the committee's report of the i meeting will be made to the I full council at its next meet- • ing on June 3. “The interest of the Clean • Air Society and the assistance I it is able to offer in air pollution matters are much appre- ■ dated,” said Mr Warren.
