BLAZERS TO BE WORN WITH UNIFORMS

Boys at Linwood High School will be allowed to wear blazers with their school uniforms, it was decided at the monthly meeting of the board of governors.

The headmaster (Mr J. Orman) said that although fifth and sixth formers were allowed to wear suits this did not apply to third and fourth form pupils, who wore the regulation shorts, shirt and a cardigan in the colder weather. Some parents had asked that their children be

allowed to wear blazers in the winter. Mr Orman said that the decision would be most appreciated by the lower forms and the sixth forms. The fifth forms were much more interested in the opportunity to wear suits. The board received the transcript of a letter from the Department of Education to the Electricity Department expressing concern at the apparent lack of action in widening the Linwood High School electricity cable. The secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan) said that instructions had originally been sent for the cable to be widened in January so that the school would not again suffer the shortage of power that it had in the winter of 1968. When he had been notified of the apparent continuing shortage of power in the recent cold spell he had written to the Education Department asking if the action had been taken, he said. Mr Orman said that in the recent cold weather it had not been possible to use the machinery in the machine shop because of the lack of power. The resignation of Mr B. R. Pearse to take a position as senior lecturer at the Christchurch Secondary Teachers’ Training College was received with regret
