Flections For Vietnam
Sir;—Referring to the N.L.F.’s November amendment concerning, “holding of free general elections in South Vietnam,” I have written in a letter to Senator Fulbright, “I hope you will agree that their amended ‘five point stand’ has moved much closer to being ‘a sound basis for a solution’, ” the latter being a repeat quotation from the N.L.F. representative’s reply to me. This sort .of thing comes out in “The Press” as a blunt, “On this, the front’s five-point stand produced a sound baste for a solution, Mr Sadler said.” I would suggest to “The Press” that qualify-
ing remarks are important when quoting someone. I treat whatever the N.L.F. says with caution and think it may be months or even years before a mutually acceptable “sound basis for a solution" is really arrived at. I merely wished, to draw attention to what may be a significant step forward.—Yours, etc., MARK D. SADLER. May 9, 1969.
