Captain Cook To Be Theme Of Stamp Exhibition

Captain James Cook’s rediscovery of New Zealand 200 years ago will be the theme of the national stamp exhibition at New Plymouth from October 6 to 11 this year. Named Tarapex 1969, the exhibition will use as , its motif the 50-cent coin design by Mr James Berry, Wellington, which shows Cook's ship Endeavour passing Mount Egmoot, Taranaki's best-known landmark. The motif will be used on the prospectus and catalogue coven, all letterheads and publicity promotion generally. Permission to use the motif was given by the Treasury.

Known to the Maoris as Taranaki, Mount Egmont did i not reveal itself to the Dutch navigator, Abel Tasman, who discovered New Zealand in 1642. Captain Cook had better fortune. On January 10, 1770, he saw “a very high mountain and in appearance greatly resembling the peak of Teneriffe.” (Teneriffe is one of the Canary Islands.) The name of Egmont was given in honour of the Earl of Egmont, then First Lord of the Admiralty. The exhibition, which will be staged by the Taranaki Philatelic Society, is open to competitors from New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific Islands south of the Equator, as well as to members of any philatelic society beyond New Zealand whose members primarily collect the stamps of New Zealand and/or its dependencies. A trophy given by the New Zealand Post Office will be awarded to the best competitive entry in the exhibition. Medal awards will be struck in gold, silver-gold, silver and bronze, and will be accompanied by a certificate. The classification of ex-

hibits is as follows:—Group 1, New Zealand; group 2 Australia; group 3, Pacific Islands; group 4, Antarctica; B r °up British Commonwealth; group 6, countries other than British; group 7, airmails; group 8, Iqcal posts; group 9, thematic collections; group 10, junior section. During the exhibition the Post Office will open and maintain a Post Office at th* Exhibition Hail and will prov vide a special opening day date stamp as well as a special first day of issue date stamp for the Cook bicentenary issue due for release by the Post Office during the exhibition.

Stamp collectors who are members of the Federation of Philatelic Societies of New Zealand will hold a congress in New Plymouth during the exhibition and the Postal Historical Society of New Zealand will hold a special meeting at New Plymouth at the same time.

Entries for the exhibition close on May 31, 1969, and all entries must be received by the exhibition committeeon or before September 22. 1969. *
